San Marino approves VeChain’s eNFT backed vaccination certificate

  • San Marion has announced the VeChain vaccination certificate based on eNFT.
  • The vaccination certificate contains two QR codes that can reveal details on the holder’s COVID-related medical history.

The Republic of San Marino has approved the eNFT vaccination certificate by VeChain, which is verifiable across the globe. In a press release, San Marino announced that it has approved “Decree-Law no. 109 of 16 June.” The newly approved law backs the rollout of a vaccination passport named “San Marino Digital Covid Certificate.”

Each of the San Marino vaccination certificates will reveal records of past infections of the bearer. Also, the vaccination passport contains negative test results and, at the same time, provides holders with a digital vaccination certificate.

San Marino announces vaccination certificate

The VeChain Foundation and the DNV Assurance collaborated with the Republic of San Marino for the issuance of the digital COVID-19 vaccination certificates. San Marino will issue the digital certificates through eNFT, a kind of digital asset on the VeChainThor blockchain.

VeChain Foundation announced in a tweet:

Together with DNV Assurance, we hereby announce the world’s first national level 3NFT adoption:

The Republic of San Marino has just approved the Digital COVID Certificate, issued using NFTs through the VeChainThor public blockchain.

The global director of Growth and Innovation at DNV, Renato Grottola, spoke on the use of VeChain’s blockchain technology. Grottola said that blockchain technology and NFTs fueled more confidence in the originality of the information provided on the certificate. He also noted that the adopted technology use reduces the fear of counterfeiting.

Furthermore, each vaccination certificate issued in San Marion is valid for 1 week and 15 days after the first dose. VeChain Foundation further stated that after the second dose, the certificate would be valid for 9 months. Authorized bodies can issue the certification in accordance with users’ preferences. The certificate is available on paper or in digital format.

The President of San Marino Innovation, Lorenzo Spadoni, referred to the digital COVID certificate as an important tool that makes the country align with the “technical standards used by the European Union.” Spadoni said the certification helps San Marino with total interoperability.

In addition, the certificate has two QR codes that reveal all COVID-related medical history of the holder when scanned. The first code complies with the standards and requirements of the European Union. The code can only be verified by authorized personnel like member states entities. On the other hand, anyone anywhere outside the EU can scan the second QR code. The second QR code also directs users to an app that can be used to verify the authentication of the code. The VeChain Foundation explained:

This is enabled by linking to a Non-Fungible Token (NFT), i.e. a unique and non-repeated certificate of digital authenticity guaranteeing immutability and accessibility by being registered on VeChainThor public blockchain.

The announcement of the San Marino eNFT vaccination certificate has triggered reactions from members of the VeChain community. One of the members referred to the partnership “as the biggest mainstream adoption of blockchain in recent history.”

Earlier this year, VeChain partnered with the Mediterranean Hospital of Cyprus to keep vaccination records on the blockchain. On the 5th of January, VeChain Foundation said in a tweet that it had secured the first 100 COVID-10 vaccination records for medical personnel on its public blockchain.
